Futures margin is collateral required to hold leveraged exposure. It is not the price of the contract and does not cap the loss. A responsible plan measures the full notional exposure and the rupee effect of price movement before deciding quantity.
Calculate notional exposure
Multiply the futures price by the current lot size and number of contracts. Compare this value with the trading capital to see the effective exposure controlled by the position.

Separate margin from planned loss
The broker may block only part of the notional value, but a move in the contract affects the full quantity. The entry-to-stop distance multiplied by quantity provides an initial planned-loss estimate.
Allow for gaps and margin changes
Overnight or event-driven gaps can produce an exit beyond the planned stop. Volatility can also change exchange or broker margin requirements, creating additional funding pressure.
Size from capital risk
Choose the maximum rupee loss first and calculate whether one contract fits. If the smallest contract exceeds the risk limit, the instrument may not fit the account or scenario.
Stress-test the futures position
Calculate planned loss at the stop, then test larger adverse moves and a higher margin requirement. A stress test does not predict the worst outcome; it checks whether the account can absorb conditions that are worse than the base plan.
Include all correlated futures and cash positions. Available funds can fall quickly when several exposures respond to the same market event.

Monitor the contract through its full life
Track expiry, liquidity migration, settlement rules and broker notices. A position suitable in the active near-month contract can become harder to manage as volume moves to the next expiry.
If margin changes or capital falls, recalculate leverage instead of assuming the entry-day relationship still applies. Risk management is continuous while the contract remains open.
