Weekly vs Monthly Options: Match Expiry to the Research Horizon

Compare time remaining, liquidity, event exposure, sensitivity and thesis duration before selecting an options expiry.

Expiry selection determines how much time an options thesis has to develop and how strongly premium may react to time and volatility. Weekly and monthly contracts can express the same directional view with different risks.

Begin with the expected holding period

An intraday plan and a multi-week thesis should not automatically use the same expiry. The contract should leave enough time for the scenario while maintaining acceptable liquidity and cost.

Compare time sensitivity

Shorter-dated options can react rapidly near the strike and lose remaining time value quickly. Longer-dated contracts may carry more premium but give the thesis more time and can have different volatility exposure.

Check the event calendar

An expiry that crosses results, policy announcements or other events can include additional volatility risk. Avoid assuming a later expiry is automatically safer.

Recalculate risk for the chosen contract

Different premiums and stop distances change quantity. Select expiry first, then measure entry-to-stop risk and spread for the exact contract rather than copying size from another expiry.

Compare contracts through the same scenario

For a weekly and monthly option, record premium, spread, moneyness and days remaining, then apply the same underlying activation and invalidation. This exposes the trade-off between upfront premium, time and sensitivity.

Use the exact exchange contract specifications and current liquidity. Expiry schedules and available products can change, so old assumptions should not control a live decision.

Choose the risk you can explain

A shorter contract may demand faster timing, while a longer contract can carry more vega and capital exposure. Select the contract whose main risks match the research horizon and can be monitored consistently.

Review contract choice separately from directional accuracy. If the underlying thesis worked but the selected expiry did not, the lesson belongs to product selection rather than market direction.
